At its best, Kenyan coffee is quite remarkable with a quality and intensity rarely matched elsewhere.  The best examples have an unmistakable profile -  a bold, effervescent acidity, ripe and viscous mouthfeel, combined with vibrant citrus, berry and blackcurrant notes.  Central Kenya continues to produce the peak of this quality, with Kirinyaga and Nyeri being the stand out districts year in year out.

Gatomboya factory, a shining star of Nyeri and an Artisan Roast favourite, serves farmer members living near Karatina town, their few hundred trees growing on rolling, red earthed hills under the shadow of Mount Kenya.  They bring ripe red cherry from these trees into the central processing factory and it is typical for the members to re-sort their harvest on the day of picking before fermentation takes place.  This separates out the best of the coffee, the results of which we are delighted to be able to buy.

The roast of this large beaned AA micro-lot has been kept light with filter brewing in mind.  This approach helps to preserve the complex, almost effervescent, citric and apple like acidity of Gatomboya. This structure is supported with a light muscovado sugar like sweetness that balances taste and enhances the fruit and caramel like flavours.  Stand out flavours of lemon citrus, molasses and blackcurrant lead onto undertones of vanilla, dark chocolate, and honeysuckle florals.

Best enjoyed through filter, AeroPress, or French Press brewing methods. For the purest expression, we recommend drinking it black to experience its full clarity and complexity.  If you prefer milk with your coffee the flavours will switch to a warming, satisfying cinder toffee and citrus curd on a butter like mouthfeel.
