The Cup of Excellence is the worlds most respected quality competition in coffee, based on 20 years of recognising and rewarding the world’s premier coffee producers. Coffees that win are layered, delicious coffees with nuance, clarity of flavour, and supreme balance that is rarely found. When this combines with the growing region of Nariño in Colombia, synonymous with effortless balance and finesse, the outcome is exceptional.

Lot #7 was produced by Jose Ignacio Gomez Lopez on his small seven-hectare farm just outside the well know city of Buesaco, Nariño. Since buying his farm Jose has worked on skills to support his farming and tastes all his own coffees as well as working to develop his fermentation after harvesting. This lot is an example of how a longer than usual fermentation, at least eighteen hours, can help develop unique flavours. Because Colombian farms typically ferment their own coffees
after pulping, each farm has their own unique microorganisms to create its flavour signature.

The flavour signature from Jose’s El Paraiso has all the hallmarks of a great Nariño coffee with the added finesse of an award-winning Cup of Excellence lot. Moreish panela caramels provide a base on which layered notes of cooked apple, red currant and orange citrus combine. There are subtle hints of vanilla, cacao nib and black tea on the finish, held together by a balanced and effervescent acidity. The mouthfeel is silky, supported by a positive sweetness, that combines the elements in balance.
